Do I Need a Vignette for Bulgaria? 2026 Update

Yes, if you are driving a vehicle up to 3.5 t on any Bulgarian motorway (A road) or first-, second- or third-class state road (I, II or III road), you must display a valid e-vignette. Bulgaria replaced physical windshield stickers with an electronic plate-linked system in 2019, so there is no physical vignette to stick anywhere.

Key Reality: Enforcement is via roadside ANPR cameras that read your plate and check it against the vignette database in real time. A weekend vignette costs just €6.60 (BGN 12.91), so there is no practical reason to risk a compensatory fee of €46.50 (BGN 90.95), or a fine of €153.39 (BGN 300) if it goes unpaid.

2026 Update: Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, and vignette and Tol Pass prices are now set in EUR, with BGN shown at the fixed rate of 1.95583. Car e-vignette prices were updated from 1 August 2026: daily €5.30, weekend €6.60, 7 days €10.00, 1 month €19.90, 3 months €35.90 and annual €64.50. The Tol Pass distance tariff for HGVs and buses is published per km by weight class, axle count, Euro emission class and road class.

How to Pay Bulgaria Tolls

Car e-Vignette — Purchase Channels:

• Online: BGTOLL (web portal and mobile app) - purchase by plate number; instant activation; pay by card; can be bought up to 30 days before the start date
• Self-service terminals at Bulgarian border crossings, petrol stations and authorised sales outlets within the country

HGV Tol Pass — OBU and Registration:

• Cars without a valid e-vignette: compensatory fee of €46.50 (BGN 90.95); if it goes unpaid, an administrative fine of €153.39 (BGN 300) can follow

Planning Your Journey

• Buy the e-vignette online at BGTOLL before entering Bulgaria - it activates immediately and there is no advantage to buying at the border
• A 7-day vignette (€10.00 for a car) covers most holiday driving and transit trips; for a short Friday to Sunday trip, the weekend vignette (€6.60) is cheaper
• The Trakia Motorway (A1) from Sofia to Burgas and the Hemus Motorway (A2) from Sofia toward Varna are the primary long-distance routes - both covered by the standard vignette
• First-, second- and third-class state roads also require the vignette - do not assume only motorways are covered

Where can I buy the Bulgarian e-vignette?

Online at BGTOLL (recommended - available from anywhere before travel, up to 30 days before the start date), at self-service terminals at border crossings, petrol stations and authorised sales outlets, and via some third-party European vignette portals.

Do I need a vignette on secondary roads (II and III class)?

Yes. The vignette requirement covers motorways and first-, second- and third-class (I, II and III) state roads. Roads outside the national road network, such as municipal streets, are not covered.

Is the weekend vignette valid for longer than Friday to Monday?

No. The weekend vignette is valid from Friday 12:00 noon to Sunday 23:59 only, and does not extend to Monday. If you buy it after Friday 12:00, it starts at the time of purchase and still ends on Sunday 23:59. If you plan to drive on weekdays, purchase a 7-day vignette instead.

Do I need a separate vignette for a trailer?

Yes, if the combined weight of the car and trailer is over 3.5 t. A separate trailer e-vignette is sold on BGTOLL; it is registered to the trailer's plate and must cover the same validity period as the towing vehicle.
