Cameras record every vehicle that passes a toll point. If the claim is unpaid on its due date, it goes to collection and a collection fee is added. At the Hornafjörður section, the toll is billed to the registered owner. Rental companies typically pay unpaid tolls and charge them to the renter's card together with their own service fee, so paying promptly through [https://www.veggjald.is/en/pricing veggjald] or spolur.is is the cheapest option.

Iceland Toll Roads Guide

System: Electronic toll collection only (ANPR cameras, no booths)
Operator: Vaðlaheiðargöng hf. (Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel) / Vegagerðin (Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration), with toll collection by Spölur ehf. (Hornafjörður Ring Road section)
Currency: Icelandic Krona (ISK)
Coverage: Two toll points only, Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel (North Iceland) and Hornafjörður Ring Road section with the Hornafjarðarfljót bridge (Southeast Iceland)
Technology: Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), online payment, no vignette, no transponder

Do I Need Iceland Tolls? 2026 Update

Iceland does not have a nationwide toll road network. There is no vignette, no transponder, and almost the entire Ring Road (Route 1) and secondary road system is toll-free. As of 2026, only two locations charge a toll: the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel near Akureyri in North Iceland, and a newly built Ring Road section through Hornafjörður near Höfn in Southeast Iceland, tolled since September 1, 2026.

Key Reality: There are no toll booths anywhere in Iceland. Cameras read your license plate automatically. For the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, payment must be completed online within 24 hours before or after your trip. For the Hornafjörður section, tolls are billed to the vehicle owner at the end of each month, and single trips can also be paid at spolur.is.

2026 Update: Since January 1, 2026, Iceland also charges a separate nationwide per-kilometer road usage fee (kílómetragjald) that replaced part of the old fuel tax system. This is a road tax on all vehicles, including EVs, and is unrelated to the two toll points described here.

Iceland Toll Costs: Current Rates

Iceland's two toll points charge per-trip fees based on the registered weight class of the vehicle, not on distance. Each payment covers one passage in one direction.

Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel Rates (2026)

Vehicle Class Single Trip
Under 3.5 tonnes (cars, campervans) 2,216 ISK
3.5 tonnes to 7.5 tonnes (light trucks, large vans) 3,087 ISK
Over 7.5 tonnes (larger transport, trucks) 6,505 ISK

Prices are valid from March 2, 2026 and include 11% VAT. Motorcycles pass the tunnel toll-free. Trailers, caravans and pop-up campers carry no extra charge. The tunnel is about 7.5 km long, with a maximum vehicle height of 4.2 m and a speed limit of 70 km/h.

Vaðlaheiðargöng Prepaid Trips and Subscriptions (2026)

Hornafjörður Ring Road Toll (2026)

Over 7.5 tonnes 4,500 ISK No tiers listed No tiers listed No cap listed

The Hornafjörður section opened to traffic on June 24, 2026, and tolling has run since September 1, 2026. The toll covers the new Ring Road section near Höfn, including the new 250 m bridge over Hornafjarðarfljót. Cameras at the limits of the tolled section read each license plate and look up the owner in the national vehicle registry. Vehicle class follows the registered weight of the vehicle, not its weight while travelling.

How to Pay Iceland Tolls

Both Icelandic tolls are cashless and paid by license plate, online or through the toll operator's website.

 • Vaðlaheiðargöng online: Pay at veggjald (also reachable through tunnel.is) up to 24 hours before or after your trip through the tunnel
 • Vaðlaheiðargöng app: The official "Veggjald" app (iOS and Android) supports single-trip payment and vehicle registration
 • Vaðlaheiðargöng pre-registration: Register a license plate and card on veggjald for automatic billing, up to 120 prepaid trips per account. Registration is free, and up to three vehicles under 3.5 tonnes can be registered
 • Vaðlaheiðargöng online banking: If a trip is not paid within 24 hours, a claim for the same price is sent to the vehicle owner's online bank
 • Hornafjörður automated billing: Fully automated ANPR billing, no sign-in required at the time of travel. Bills are sent to the vehicle owner's account at the end of each month
 • Hornafjörður single trips: Individual trips can be paid at spolur.is

Enforcement and Penalties

Cameras record every vehicle that passes a toll point. At the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, if a single trip is not paid within the 24-hour window, a claim for the toll is sent to the vehicle owner's online bank at no additional cost. If the claim is unpaid on its due date, it goes to collection and a collection fee is added. At the Hornafjörður section, the toll is billed to the registered owner. Rental companies typically pay unpaid tolls and charge them to the renter's card together with their own service fee, so paying promptly through veggjald or spolur.is is the cheapest option.

Recent Changes (2026)

 • Vaðlaheiðargöng prices changed effective March 2, 2026: 2,216 ISK for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, 3,087 ISK for 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes, and 6,505 ISK for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes
 • New Hornafjörður Ring Road section opened to traffic June 24, 2026, shortening the Ring Road by 12 km and the route from Reykjavík to Höfn by about 14 km
 • Hornafjörður tolling began September 1, 2026, to help finance the construction, operation and maintenance of the new road
 • Nationwide per-kilometer road usage fee (kílómetragjald), 6.95 ISK/km for cars under 3.5 tonnes, introduced January 1, 2026, replacing part of the fuel excise duty; applies to all vehicles including EVs and is separate from the two tolls above. Heavier vehicles pay higher rates. Rental companies collect the fee either per kilometer from odometer readings, sometimes with a small service charge, or as a flat daily fee

Planning Your Journey

Cost Considerations:

 • A one-way Ring Road trip through both toll points costs roughly 3,700 ISK for a standard car (2,216 ISK + 1,500 ISK) and roughly 11,000 ISK for a vehicle over 7.5 tonnes (6,505 ISK + 4,500 ISK)
 • Each toll payment covers one direction, so a return trip through a toll point is paid twice
 • The Hornafjörður toll falls with repeat trips in a month, and is capped at 18,750 ISK per month for cars under 3.5 tonnes
 • Rental car companies collect the per-kilometer road tax in different ways, either per kilometer driven or as a flat daily fee folded into your booking

Toll-Free Alternatives:

 • The Víkurskarð mountain pass bypasses the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel toll-free but can be closed or hazardous in winter. The tunnel shortens the Ring Road by about 16 km
 • The longer older Ring Road route can be used instead of the new Hornafjörður section, which saves about 12 km
 • Hvalfjörður tunnel near Reykjavík has been toll-free since September 2018
 • Every other road and tunnel in Iceland, including the rest of the Ring Road, remains toll-free

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I avoid Iceland's tolls completely?

Yes, in most cases. The Víkurskarð pass offers a free alternative to the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel in good weather. The Hornafjörður toll section can be avoided by using the longer older Ring Road route, which adds about 12 km.

What happens if I don't pay?

At the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, a claim for the toll is sent to the vehicle's registered owner after the 24-hour window, and a collection fee is added only if the claim is not paid by its due date. At Hornafjörður, the toll is billed to the registered owner. Rental cars will have the toll plus the rental company's own service fee charged after return.

Do tourists get different rates?

No, tolls are the same for all drivers, and vehicles with foreign license plates can register or pay at veggjald like any other. Rental companies collect the per-kilometer road tax in their own way, either per kilometer driven or as a flat daily fee.

Do I pay twice for a return trip?

Yes. Each payment covers a single passage in one direction at both toll points.

Do motorcycles pay the tunnel toll?

No. Motorcycles pass the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel without paying a toll.

Is the per-kilometer road tax a toll?

No. It is a nationwide road maintenance fee based on distance driven, replacing part of the old fuel tax. It applies everywhere in Iceland and is unrelated to the two toll points covered on this page.

Is the Hvalfjörður tunnel still tolled?

No, it has been free since September 2018. Any information stating otherwise is outdated.

Are national park parking fees the same as road tolls?

No. Sites such as Þingvellir, Skaftafell, and other natural attractions charge separate parking or facility entrance fees, paid on-site or via platforms like Parka.is. These are unrelated to Iceland's two road tolls and are not covered by this page.
