<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes — any vehicle up to 3,500 kg using tolled Slovenian motorways or expressways must have a valid e-vignette. There are no toll booths or cash payment points for passenger cars, except at the Karavanke Tunnel. The vignette is purchased digitally and linked to your licence plate; no sticker is placed on the windscreen.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">Key Reality:</strong> ANPR cameras enforce the vignette requirement continuously. Driving without a valid vignette results in on-the-spot fines of €300–€800 for passenger cars. A 7-day vignette costs just €16.00 in 2026 — the fine is never worth the risk.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">2026 Update:</strong> E-vignette prices for 2026 are unchanged. The DarsGo system continues as the mandatory distance-based toll for all vehicles over 3,500 kg. The e-vignette system remains fully digital — purchase is made online or at petrol stations, and validity starts on the start date you choose. As of January 1, 2026, the H5 expressway between Škofije, Koper and Izola was reclassified as a main road, so passenger vehicles (up to 3,500 kg) no longer need an e-vignette on this coastal section coming from Italy. The H6 section between Koper and Lucija was already free of vignette. The measure is temporary, until the Koper–Dragonja expressway is completed, and vehicles over 3,500 kg still pay via DarsGo on these sections.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Slovenia operates a two-tier toll system. Vehicles under 3,500 kg pay a flat periodic vignette fee regardless of distance driven. Vehicles over 3,500 kg pay per kilometre via DarsGo based on toll class (number of axles) and Euro emission class.</p>

Slovenia charges highway tolls using vignettes for domestic transportation. You can pay truck tolls in Slovenia using the DarsGo box<ref>[https://www.darsgo.si/portal/ DarsGo box]</ref>. Karavanke tunnel connects Austria and Slovenia. For vehicles not exceeding 3.5 tonnes the charged tolls for Karavanke tunnel can directly be paid at the toll gate at Hrušica toll station.

Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes of weight (including motorcycles) are charged tolls using vignette.
The vignette cost in Slovenia is dependent upon :
# Weight
# Duration
# Height
# Axles (Cars/Motorcycles)

=== How much is vignette in Slovenia for 2021 ===
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Vehicles over 3,500 kg must use a DarsGo OBU (on-board unit) and pay per kilometre. The tolled network is divided into 128 toll sections. Each section has a gantry that detects the OBU by DSRC microwave, and toll is charged for every section travelled. The charge depends on section length, toll class (number of axles), Euro emission class (0–VI) and CO2 class, and includes VAT. The driver sets the toll class on the OBU before each trip. Below are indicative 2026 rates for the most common configurations. Euro IV and EEV vehicles have separate rates in the DarsGo tariff.</p>
The following table provides the latest 2021 toll charges of vignette  (including VAT) in Slovenia based on validity period.

Put in place on 1st April 2018, DarsGo is an electronic toll system which utilizes microwave technology to charge tolls to heavy vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes of weight. The whole Slovenian motorway and expressway network with the total length of 623 km is divided into 128 tolling sections. With the help of gantries installed above each section and the DarsGo box installed in the vehicles, tolling is automatic with fees based on total distance traveled.

Cost of issuing a DarsGo<ref>[https://www.as24.com/en/offers/tolls/slovenia Cost of DarsGo Box]</ref> unit is 10 EUR (VAT included) and can be purchased from [https://www.darsgo.si/portal/ DarsGo] portal.

Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (class R1) must pay a separate, independent toll of €9.00 per passage at the Hrušica toll station, by cash, credit card or debit card. Frequent users can buy a non-transferable point card at the Hrušica toll station for €40.40, valid for 14 passages within 30 days. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (R2, R3 and R4) pay electronically through DarsGo between the Hrušica ramp and the border inside the tunnel, without stopping at the toll station. The tunnel toll is set by government decree and does not depend on the Euro emission class. The toll is charged separately on each side of the border: travelling north from Slovenia you pay at Hrušica, and travelling south from Austria the toll is paid to ASFINAG on the Austrian side.</p>

Slovenia Vignette & DarsGo Toll Complete Guide

System: E-vignette (passenger vehicles) + DarsGo distance-based toll (vehicles over 3,500 kg)
Operator: DARS d.d. (Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia)
Currency: Euro (EUR)
Coverage: All motorways (A-roads) and expressways (H-roads), approximately 620 km, except the toll-free sections listed under Planning Your Journey
Technology: ANPR cameras (vignette enforcement), DSRC microwave gantries and OBU transponders (DarsGo)

Do I Need a Vignette for Slovenia? 2026 Update

Yes — any vehicle up to 3,500 kg using tolled Slovenian motorways or expressways must have a valid e-vignette. There are no toll booths or cash payment points for passenger cars, except at the Karavanke Tunnel. The vignette is purchased digitally and linked to your licence plate; no sticker is placed on the windscreen.

Key Reality: ANPR cameras enforce the vignette requirement continuously. Driving without a valid vignette results in on-the-spot fines of €300–€800 for passenger cars. A 7-day vignette costs just €16.00 in 2026 — the fine is never worth the risk.

2026 Update: E-vignette prices for 2026 are unchanged. The measure is temporary, until the Koper–Dragonja expressway is completed, and vehicles over 3,500 kg still pay via DarsGo on these sections.

Slovenia Toll Costs: Current Rates

Slovenia operates a two-tier toll system. Vehicles under 3,500 kg pay a flat periodic vignette fee regardless of distance driven. Vehicles over 3,500 kg pay per kilometre via DarsGo based on toll class (number of axles) and Euro emission class.

E-Vignette Rates by Vehicle Class (2026)

Vehicle Class 7-Day 1-Month 6-Month Annual
Class 1 — Motorcycles (one-track motor vehicles) €8.00 N/A €32.00 €58.70
Class 2A — Cars and motorhomes up to 1.30 m above the front axle €16.00 €32.00 N/A €117.50
Class 2B — Vans and other two-track vehicles over 1.30 m above the front axle €32.00 €64.10 N/A €235.00

Class 2A applies to vehicles up to 3,500 kg and up to 1.30 m above the front axle; campervans and motorhomes are always Class 2A. Annual vignettes are valid for 12 months from the start date you choose, not for the calendar year. Annual vignettes still valid on 1 December 2025 were automatically extended by 4 months.

DarsGo Distance Toll Rates for Heavy Vehicles (2026)

Vehicles over 3,500 kg must use a DarsGo OBU (on-board unit) and pay per kilometre. Euro IV and EEV vehicles have separate rates in the DarsGo tariff.

Vehicle Class Euro 0–III (€/km) Euro V (€/km) Euro VI / Alternative fuel (€/km)
Class R2 — 2 axles (over 3,500 kg) €0.200061 €0.140043 €0.120036
Class R3 — 3 axles (over 3,500 kg) €0.22229 €0.155603 €0.133374
Class R4 — 4 or more axles (over 3,500 kg) €0.462363 €0.323654 €0.277418

Example DarsGo journey costs (Class R4, Euro VI, indicative): Ljubljana–Maribor (128 km) ≈ €35.51 | Ljubljana–Koper (107 km) ≈ €29.68 | Maribor–Koper (via Ljubljana, ~235 km) ≈ €65.19.

How to Pay Slovenia Tolls

Purchasing the E-Vignette (Vehicles under 3,500 kg)

1. Online (recommended):

  • Purchase at Evinjeta — valid from the start date you choose
  • Enter your vehicle licence plate; no physical sticker is issued
  • Available 24/7, credit and debit cards accepted, confirmation by email
  • Can be purchased up to 30 days in advance

2. Petrol stations and rest areas:

  • Available at all major petrol stations in Slovenia and at border crossing points
  • Also sold at selected petrol stations in Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia near the Slovenian border
  • Cash and card accepted; vignette is registered to your plate in DARS's system on the spot

3. DARS App (DarsGo app / e-Vinjeta):

  • Available for iOS and Android; manage vignettes and DarsGo accounts in one place
  • Push notifications for expiry reminders

DarsGo OBU Registration (Vehicles over 3,500 kg)

  • Operators must obtain a DarsGo OBU device from a DARS distribution point or registered reseller before entering Slovenia
  • OBU is fitted to the windscreen; gantries above the road record each passage and the distance on tolled roads is charged automatically
  • The OBU is tied to one vehicle and cannot be transferred; it records the registration number and EURO emission class
  • The driver sets the toll class (number of axles) on the OBU before each trip
  • Pre-pay or post-pay (commercial invoice) accounts available
  • OBU issue fee: €10.00 including VAT; returning the OBU and refunding the remaining credit costs €6.00
  • Foreign hauliers can use interoperable EETS (European Electronic Toll Service) OBUs from certified providers in lieu of a DarsGo OBU
  • DarsGo service centres are located at major border crossings (Fernetiči/Trieste corridor, Gruškovje/Croatia, Šentilj/Austria)

Enforcement and Penalties

Offence Vehicle Type Fine (2026)
No valid e-vignette Class 1 (motorcycle) €300
No valid e-vignette Class 2A/2B (car/van) €300–€800
No DarsGo OBU / non-functional OBU HGV / Bus (over 3,500 kg) €800–€2,000
Incorrect vehicle classification in DarsGo HGV €500–€1,200
OBU tampered with or covered HGV / Bus Up to €4,000

Enforcement is carried out by DARS inspectors, the Financial Administration and Slovenian traffic police. ANPR cameras on motorway gantries, at control points and in mobile control vehicles cross-reference plates against the e-vignette database in real time. The fine is reduced by up to 50% when paid on the spot or within 8 days; failure to pay results in referral to debt collection and, for foreign vehicles, potential vehicle detention at the border.

Recent Changes (2026)

Vignette Prices (2026):

  • Car (Class 2A) prices are unchanged: €16.00 (7-day), €32.00 (1-month), €117.50 (annual)
  • Annual vignettes still valid on 1 December 2025 were automatically extended by 4 months
  • No new vignette duration categories introduced

DarsGo Rates (2026):

  • Per-km rates for toll classes R2, R3 and R4 are set per toll section and Euro emission class; Euro VI and alternative-fuel (non-hybrid) vehicles keep the lowest rate
  • EETS (European Electronic Toll Service) interoperability extended to additional certified OBU providers

Infrastructure Updates:

  • Karavanke Tunnel (A2, Austria border) — toll for vehicles up to 3,500 kg increased from €8.80 to €9.00 on 1 January 2026; the second tube opened to traffic on 18 March 2026
  • H5 expressway (Škofije–Izola) reclassified as a main road from 1 January 2026; passenger vehicles need no e-vignette there until the Koper–Dragonja expressway is completed

Planning Your Journey

Cost Considerations:

  • Transit drivers (e.g. Vienna to Zagreb) spending fewer than 7 days in Slovenia: the 7-day vignette at €16.00 is optimal
  • Regular commuters or those spending more than a month: annual vignette at €117.50 pays for itself in under 4 months compared to repeated 1-month purchases
  • Truck operators running Ljubljana–Koper regularly: factor about €29.70 per trip in DarsGo costs for an R4 Euro VI vehicle (indicative); Euro VI compliance yields meaningful savings over time

Toll-Free Alternatives:

  • Regional roads (R-roads) and main roads (G-roads) are toll-free but significantly slower
  • Ljubljana–Maribor via the old Celje road adds considerable travel time versus A1 motorway
  • For short city-to-city trips under 30 km, regional roads may be viable — for transit across Slovenia, the motorway with vignette is almost always faster and cost-effective

Toll-Free Sections:

  • A2 motorway from the Austrian border to the Hrušica junction (the Karavanke Tunnel toll still applies)
  • H2 expressway between Pesnica and Tezno
  • H6 expressway between Koper and Lucija
  • H5 expressway between Škofije and Izola, for passenger vehicles (vehicles over 3,500 kg still pay via DarsGo)

Karavanke Tunnel Notice: The Karavanke Tunnel (7,864 m) is entirely excluded from the standard e-vignette system. The toll is charged separately on each side of the border: travelling north from Slovenia you pay at Hrušica, and travelling south from Austria the toll is paid to ASFINAG on the Austrian side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy the vignette at the Slovenian border?

Yes. Vignettes are sold at petrol stations immediately before most border crossing points. However, purchasing online in advance at Evinjeta is faster and avoids queues. The vignette is valid from the start date you select.

Does my Austrian or Swiss vignette cover Slovenia?

No. Each country's vignette is only valid within that country's motorway network. You need a separate Slovenian e-vignette to use Slovenian motorways.

I'm a tourist driving through Slovenia — which vignette should I buy?

Most tourists and transit drivers choose the 7-day vignette (€16.00 for Class 2A). It covers unlimited motorway use for 7 consecutive days and is valid from the start date you select.

What is DarsGo and who needs it?

DarsGo is Slovenia's electronic distance-based toll system for vehicles over 3,500 kg — trucks, HGVs, buses and coaches. Instead of a vignette, these vehicles pay per kilometre driven on motorways and expressways. An OBU device must be fitted before entering Slovenia; EETS-compatible OBUs from other EU providers are also accepted.

Is there a fine if I enter a motorway briefly — even just one exit?

Yes. A valid e-vignette is required for any use of the tolled motorway network, including driving just one junction. There is no short-distance exemption, except on the toll-free H5 and H6 sections. Cameras are active at all motorway entry points.

Do electric vehicles pay reduced vignette rates?

Passenger EVs under 3,500 kg pay the same e-vignette rates as petrol and diesel vehicles. For heavy electric vehicles over 3,500 kg using DarsGo, the Euro VI rate applies — the lowest per-km rate in the DarsGo tariff schedule.
