<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No, you don't need SiVAPass to use Guatemala's toll roads - but it provides convenience for frequent users. Guatemala operates a limited toll road network with both electronic payment systems and traditional manual toll booths.</p>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No, neither electronic system is mandatory - cash is accepted everywhere - but both speed up passage significantly. SiVAPass works only on Palin-Escuintla; VAS+ works across all three VAS tramos. These are two completely separate systems operated by two separate companies - a SiVAPass account does not work on VAS roads and vice versa.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">Key Reality:</strong> Guatemala has only three main toll roads currently operational: Palín-Escuintla, VAS, and Iztapa. Most of the country's road network remains toll-free, unlike neighboring countries with extensive toll systems.</p>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">Key Reality:</strong> Guatemala has only 4-5 operational toll roads/sections. Most of the country's road network remains toll-free. Tolls are concentrated on the Palin-Escuintla corridor (the key route connecting Guatemala City to the Pacific coast ports and beaches) and the Carretera VAS network - which is not a single toll point but <strong style="font-weight: bold;">three separate, independently-tolled road sections</strong>: VAS Carretera al Pacifico, VAS Ciudad de Guatemala, and VAS Carretera a El Salvador.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">2025 Update:</strong> The new Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal autopista is under construction by CONVÍA, expected to open with Q15 toll rates. This will be Guatemala's first major new toll road in decades.</p>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">2026 Update:</strong> The new Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal autopista (41.2 km, US$140M) by CONVIA is expected to open in 2026 under a 25-year concession agreement begun July 2024. New Ley de Infraestructura Vial (December 2024) modernises the legal framework for road concessions. IDB loans of US$150M are funding additional vial improvements across the country. VAS+ (VASMAS), the free prepaid sticker system for the VAS network, continues offering a welcome bonus (one free pass on any tramo) and a 5% discount on recharges for frequent users making 5 or more passes per month.</p>

<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Guatemala operates limited toll roads with moderate rates compared to regional standards. Costs vary by road and vehicle type.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Can I avoid Guatemala tolls completely?</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes, easily. Guatemala has very limited toll roads compared to neighboring countries. Most routes can be traveled toll-free using alternative roads, though they may take longer.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">What happens if I don't pay Guatemala tolls?</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Toll evasion can result in fines and legal action. However, Guatemala's limited toll network makes accidental non-payment less common than in countries with extensive systems.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Do motorcycles pay tolls in Guatemala?</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes, motorcycles are allowed on toll roads and typically pay the same rates as light vehicles on Guatemala's limited toll network.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">When will the new Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal toll road open?</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">The new autopista is expected to open in 2026. Construction began in July 2024 under a 25-year concession agreement with CONVÍA.</p>

<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 15px 0 8px 0;">Do tourists get different rates?</h3>
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No, all vehicles pay the same toll rates regardless of nationality. Guatemala's toll system is straightforward with uniform pricing.</p>

Guatemala Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: Limited toll network with electronic and cash payment options
Coverage: Palin-Escuintla autopista (22.8 km); Carretera VAS - three independent tramos (VAS Carretera al Pacifico, VAS Ciudad de Guatemala, and VAS Carretera a El Salvador, the newest addition); Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal (2026 opening)
Currency: Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ / Q)
Technology: SiVAPass RFID (Thales PITZ, 12 lanes, up to 50 km/h) on Palin-Escuintla; VAS+ (VASMAS) - a free windshield sticker device - on all three VAS tramos; manual cash booths on both systems
Operators: Marhnos/SIVA (Palin-Escuintla); Carretera VAS (VAS's three tramos - a separate operator); CONVIA (Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal concession)

Do I Need SiVAPass or VAS+ for Guatemala? 2026 Update

No, neither electronic system is mandatory - cash is accepted everywhere - but both speed up passage significantly. SiVAPass works only on Palin-Escuintla; VAS+ works across all three VAS tramos. These are two completely separate systems operated by two separate companies - a SiVAPass account does not work on VAS roads and vice versa.

Key Reality: Guatemala has only 4-5 operational toll roads/sections. Most of the country's road network remains toll-free. Tolls are concentrated on the Palin-Escuintla corridor (the key route connecting Guatemala City to the Pacific coast ports and beaches) and the Carretera VAS network - which is not a single toll point but three separate, independently-tolled road sections: VAS Carretera al Pacifico, VAS Ciudad de Guatemala, and VAS Carretera a El Salvador.

2026 Update: The new Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal autopista (41.2 km, US$140M) by CONVIA is expected to open in 2026 under a 25-year concession agreement begun July 2024. New Ley de Infraestructura Vial (December 2024) modernises the legal framework for road concessions. IDB loans of US$150M are funding additional vial improvements across the country. VAS+ (VASMAS), the free prepaid sticker system for the VAS network, continues offering a welcome bonus (one free pass on any tramo) and a 5% discount on recharges for frequent users making 5 or more passes per month.

Guatemala Toll Costs: Current Rates (2026)

Palin-Escuintla Autopista Toll Rates

Vehicle Type Toll Rate (GTQ) Approx. USD Notes
Automobile (car) Q15.25 ~$2.00 Per passage; 2 plazas on 22.8 km route
2-axle vehicle Q30.50 ~$4.00 Vans, light trucks, pickups
3-axle vehicle Q45.75 ~$5.95 Medium trucks, buses
4-axle vehicle Q61.25 ~$8.00 Large trucks
5-axle vehicle Q76.50 ~$10.00 Semi-trailers
6-axle vehicle Q91.75 ~$11.95 Longest heavy freight vehicles
Vehicle with extra axle/carreton Q29.25 extra ~$3.80 extra Per additional trailer axle

Carretera VAS - 3 Separate Tramos (Not One Toll Point)

Refer Vasguatemala tariffs: Carretera VAS operates three independent, separately-tolled road sections. You choose which tramo to use based on your route, and each has its own toll.

Tramo Route Light Vehicle Toll Notes
VAS Carretera al Pacifico Guatemala City toward the Pacific route Q15 3 entry points on this tramo
VAS Ciudad de Guatemala (Atanasio) 8 km; Calzada Atanasio Tzul (Zona 12) to San Miguel Petapa, connecting to RD1 near km 14 Q10 4 lanes (2 per direction); same toll tier as the El Salvador tramo
VAS Carretera a El Salvador 9 km, connecting toward the El Salvador highway; 10-11 minutes at 70 km/h Q10 The newest tramo; was completely absent from earlier versions of this guide

Motorcycles and pickups pay the same rate as light vehicles on all three VAS tramos. Rates for other vehicle categories (2-3 axle buses, 4-6 axle trucks, single-axle carreton) also exist on VAS - check VAS - Tarifa y Plan de Beneficios directly.

How to Pay Guatemala Tolls

1. SiVAPass (Electronic Prepaid - Palin-Escuintla only):

  • Thales PITZ technology; sensors read pass at 5-8 second intervals; express lane up to 50 km/h - no stopping required
  • Capacity: up to 8 vehicles per minute in express lane
  • 10-20% discounts for frequent users; available at SIVA customer service points and mobile sales points (weekends at Centro Comercial Flores del Lago, Amatitlan; and Km 38.5 and 56 on the autopista)
  • Does NOT work on any VAS tramo - separate operator and system entirely

2. VAS+ / VASMAS (Free Prepaid Sticker - all 3 VAS tramos):

  • The device itself is free - a windshield sticker (calcomania) provided at no cost at the toll booth or at any VAS+ attention point.
  • Works across all three VAS tramos (Pacifico, Ciudad de Guatemala, El Salvador) - one device, any route
  • Welcome benefit: one free pass on any tramo when you first activate the device
  • Discount on a second tramo used within the same trip
  • Frequent-user bonus: 5% discount on all recharges the following month for users making 5 or more passes in a month
  • Recharge via the VAS app, vasguatemala.com, VAS+ Points located beside toll plazas, or directly through Banco Industrial or Banco G&T Continental (cash, credit card, or bank transfer)
  • Does NOT work on Palin-Escuintla - separate operator and system entirely

3. Cash:

  • Guatemalan Quetzales accepted at all toll booths on both Palin-Escuintla and all VAS tramos; prepare exact change for faster processing
  • Credit card also accepted directly at the VAS toll booth on arrival, in addition to cash
  • SIVA provides free roadside services at all booths including ambulance, roadside assistance, security, SOS cabins, and convenience stores

Recent Changes (2026)

  • Nueva Ley de Infraestructura Vial enacted December 2024 - modernises legal framework for road concessions and toll road management in Guatemala
  • Escuintla-Puerto Quetzal autopista (41.2 km, US$140M): construction by CONVIA under 25-year concession began July 2024; opening expected 2026 with initial toll rates around Q15 for light vehicles

  • All other national and departmental roads remain toll-free

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to drive from Guatemala City to the Pacific coast?

Using the Palin-Escuintla autopista: Q15.25 for a car (approximately USD$2) at each of the 2 toll plazas - total Q30.50 one way. If you instead use the VAS Carretera al Pacifico tramo for the initial stretch out of Guatemala City, that adds Q15 more. The remainder of the journey to Pacific beaches and ports via Route 2 is toll-free.

Is VAS one toll road or several?

Carretera VAS is actually three separate, independently-tolled road sections (tramos): VAS Carretera al Pacifico (Q15), VAS Ciudad de Guatemala/Atanasio (Q10), and VAS Carretera a El Salvador (Q10, the newest addition). Each has its own toll and route, though all three accept the same VAS+ prepaid device.

Is the Panamerican Highway in Guatemala tolled?

No. The Panamerican Highway (CA-1) through Guatemala is toll-free. Only the Palin-Escuintla autopista branch route and the three VAS tramos carry charges.

Do I need to buy the VAS+ device?

No. The VAS+ sticker device is provided free of charge - either at the toll booth or at any VAS+ attention point. You only pay for the toll recharges you load onto it, not for the device itself.

Are toll rates the same for all nationalities in Guatemala?

Yes. Guatemala's toll system uses uniform pricing by vehicle type regardless of driver nationality. Guatemalans and international visitors pay identical rates.
