== Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Ivory Coast? 2025 Update ==

Ivory Coast has a '''limited toll road network''' primarily consisting of two major highways. Tolls are required only on specific modern highway sections around Abidjan and the route to Yamoussoukro.

'''Toll Roads in Ivory Coast:'''
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">C&ocirc;te d&rsquo;Ivoire does not have a vignette. You pay at each toll post on the roads that have one. Most of the network is toll-free. Tolls apply on the Autoroute du Nord, the Route de l&rsquo;Est, the Abidjan-Grand-Bassam motorway, the Abidjan bridges and a growing list of regional posts.</p>
* '''Abidjan-Yamoussoukro Highway''' - 230 km (opened/extended 2013)
* '''Abidjan-Grand Bassam Highway''' - 30 km
* '''Third Bridge of Abidjan''' - Opened December 2014

'''Toll-Free Roads:'''
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">Key Reality:</strong> The toll depends on the height and the number of axles of your vehicle, not on the distance you drive. If you change the height or size of your vehicle, it can move to a higher class.</p>
* Most national and regional roads throughout the country
* Local roads and city streets
* Alternative routes parallel to toll highways

== Ivory Coast Toll Costs: Current Rates ==
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">2026 Update:</strong> FER publishes an updated 2026 tariff grid on its website. The ministry cut the rates at the Attingui&eacute; and Singrobo posts on 10 February 2025, and four new regional posts opened that month. The ministry announced new posts for 2026 on the Abidjan-Grand-Lahou, Fresco, Sassandra, San Pedro and Daloa-Man axes, and on the Autoroute du Nord.</p>

Tolls are calculated based on vehicle type and distance traveled, with payment made in West African CFA Francs.

=== Are there toll roads throughout Ivory Coast? ===
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 16px 0 8px 0; padding-top: 0">Is C&ocirc;te d&rsquo;Ivoire toll calculated per kilometer?</h3>
No, toll roads are limited to specific modern highways around Abidjan and the route to Yamoussoukro. Most of the country's road network is toll-free.

=== Can I pay tolls with foreign currency? ===
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">No. Each post charges a flat fee per passage. The fee depends on the vehicle class and the post.</p>
No, tolls must be paid in West African CFA Francs. Credit cards have very limited acceptance and should not be relied upon.

=== Are there alternative routes to avoid tolls? ===
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 16px 0 8px 0; padding-top: 0">How is my vehicle class decided?</h3>
Yes, extensive toll-free national roads parallel most toll highways, though they may take longer and have different road conditions.

=== What languages are used at toll plazas? ===
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">FER sets the class by the height and the number of axles of the vehicle. A change in height or size can move the vehicle to a higher class.</p>
French is the primary language, as it's the official language of Ivory Coast. Some English may be understood in major tourist areas.

=== Do I need special documentation for toll roads? ===
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 16px 0 8px 0; padding-top: 0">Did the toll rates go down?</h3>
Standard vehicle registration and insurance documents are sufficient. International driving permits are recommended for foreign visitors.

=== Are toll roads safer than regular roads? ===
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">Yes, at Attingui&eacute; and Singrobo, from 10 February 2025. Class 1 changed from 1,250 to 1,000 FCFA.</p>
Toll highways generally offer better road conditions, lighting, and maintenance, but traffic rules and safe driving practices remain essential.

=== How do toll costs compare to fuel savings? ===
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 16px 0 8px 0; padding-top: 0">Who receives the toll money?</h3>
Toll highways typically offer shorter distances and better road conditions, potentially providing fuel savings that offset toll costs.

== Regional Context & Development ==
<p style="font-size: 16px; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.6; margin: 8px 0;">FER collects the money on the national network. It pays for road maintenance and new road works.</p>

=== Trans-West African Coastal Highway ===
<h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: bold; color: #202122; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; margin: 16px 0 8px 0; padding-top: 0">Where can I get help?</h3>
Ivory Coast is part of the ambitious '''Trans-West African Coastal Highway (TAH 7)''' project:
* '''Total planned length:''' 4,560 km from Mauritania to Nigeria
* '''Ivory Coast section:''' Complete from Man through Yamoussoukro and Abidjan to Ghana border

Côte d’Ivoire Toll Roads Complete Guide

System: Fixed fee per passage at a toll post, set by vehicle class (NOT a distance-based rate). The class depends on vehicle height and number of axles
Operator: Fonds d’Entretien Routier (FER) operates the national network posts, including the Autoroute du Nord and the Route de l’Est. SOCOPRIM operates the Henri Konan Bédié (HKB) bridge
Currency: West African CFA franc (XOF, FCFA)
Coverage: Autoroute du Nord (Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Bouaké), Route de l’Est, Abidjan-Grand-Bassam, HKB (3rd) bridge, the 4th Abidjan bridge, and regional posts such as Katiola, Ebouassué, Eticoon-Tollakro and Lakota
Technology: Toll booths with cash payment. FER also offers subscription and balance consultation services. No vignette

Do I Need Côte d’Ivoire Tolls? 2026 Update

Côte d’Ivoire does not have a vignette. You pay at each toll post on the roads that have one. Most of the network is toll-free. Tolls apply on the Autoroute du Nord, the Route de l’Est, the Abidjan-Grand-Bassam motorway, the Abidjan bridges and a growing list of regional posts.

Key Reality: The toll depends on the height and the number of axles of your vehicle, not on the distance you drive. If you change the height or size of your vehicle, it can move to a higher class.

2026 Update: FER publishes an updated 2026 tariff grid on its website. The ministry cut the rates at the Attinguié and Singrobo posts on 10 February 2025, and four new regional posts opened that month. The ministry announced new posts for 2026 on the Abidjan-Grand-Lahou, Fresco, Sassandra, San Pedro and Daloa-Man axes, and on the Autoroute du Nord.

Côte d’Ivoire Toll Costs: Current Rates

Vehicles are grouped in 4 classes:

Class Vehicle Category
1 Light vehicles
2 Intermediate vehicles (minibuses)
3 Heavy goods vehicles, coaches and vehicles with 2 axles
4 Heavy goods vehicles, coaches and vehicles with 3 axles or more

Toll Rates by Class (FCFA per passage)

Class Vehicle Attinguié and Singrobo (Autoroute du Nord) Katiola, Ebouassué, Eticoon-Tollakro and Lakota
1 Light vehicles 1,000 500
2 Intermediate vehicles 2,500 1,500
3 Heavy vehicles, coaches, 2 axles 3,500 2,500
4 Heavy vehicles, coaches, 3+ axles 5,000 3,500

Note: rates are those in the ministry communiqué of 6 February 2025. Check the FER tariff page for the current 2026 grid.

HKB bridge: The HKB bridge in Abidjan has its own tariff, set by SOCOPRIM. See the HKB classification page for the current rates.

How to Pay Côte d’Ivoire Tolls

Pay at the toll booth in West African CFA francs.

  • Cash: Pay the amount shown at the booth. Keep small notes ready
  • Subscription and balance: FER offers subscription products and a balance consultation service. See the FER Subscription and Payment Method pages
  • Wrong class: If your vehicle is above the height or axle limit for its class, you must pay the amount displayed at the booth
  • Help: FER call centre: 1305

Enforcement and Weighing

FER also runs the vehicle weighing service (pésage) on the national network, under Regulation 14. Heavy vehicles in classes 3 and 4 must follow the axle load limits. Check the FER weighing pages before a trip.

Recent Changes (2026)

  • 30 July 2026: FER issued a communiqué on rehabilitation works, phase 3, on the Autoroute du Nord at PK 145
  • 2026: FER published an updated tariff grid for its toll posts
  • November 2025: The ministry announced new toll posts for 2026 on the Abidjan-Grand-Lahou, Fresco, Sassandra, San Pedro and Daloa-Man axes, and on the Autoroute du Nord
  • 10 to 14 February 2025: New posts opened at Katiola (10 Feb), Ebouassué (12 Feb), and Eticoon-Tollakro and Lakota (14 Feb)
  • 10 February 2025: New lower rates started at Attinguié and Singrobo. Class 1 fell from 1,250 to 1,000 FCFA and class 3 fell from 3,750 to 3,500 FCFA
  • 22 January 2025: The ministry said the Attinguié and Singrobo rates stayed unchanged until further notice, and that a review was planned

Planning Your Journey

Cost Considerations:

  • A class 1 car pays 1,000 FCFA at each of the Attinguié and Singrobo posts on the Autoroute du Nord
  • A heavy vehicle with 3 axles or more (class 4) pays 5,000 FCFA at each of these 2 posts
  • Regional posts cost less: 500 FCFA for class 1 and 3,500 FCFA for class 4
  • Check the height and the axle count of your vehicle before you drive. They decide your class

Toll-Free Alternatives:

  • Routes without a toll post are free. Check your route before you leave
  • Traffic can be heavy around the Abidjan bridges. Plan extra time at peak hours

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Côte d’Ivoire toll calculated per kilometer?

No. Each post charges a flat fee per passage. The fee depends on the vehicle class and the post.

How is my vehicle class decided?

FER sets the class by the height and the number of axles of the vehicle. A change in height or size can move the vehicle to a higher class.

Did the toll rates go down?

Yes, at Attinguié and Singrobo, from 10 February 2025. Class 1 changed from 1,250 to 1,000 FCFA.

Who receives the toll money?

FER collects the money on the national network. It pays for road maintenance and new road works.

Where can I get help?

Call the FER call centre on 1305, or visit the FER website.
